Holding statement on EFSA reassessment of BPA

The PC/BPA Group of Plastics Europe takes note of the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) draft scientific opinion on the “Re-evaluation of the risks to public health related to the presence of bisphenol A (BPA) in foodstuffs”, published on 15 December 2021.

In the draft opinion, the EFSA CEP Panel proposes to substantially lower the tolerable daily intake (TDI) compared to its previous assessment in 2015. This is an unprecedented TDI reduction which is based on study results published after the previous comprehensive EFSA opinion. A public consultation is open until 22 February 2022.

We are currently further analyzing the draft opinion to obtain a thorough understanding of the draft EFSA assessment, the underlying scientific data and its respective conclusions.

The PC/BPA-group is committed to provide input to the public consultation.
